It has been some year. After much deliberation with the Grant Street Inn, Don Julin, and past Richter Camp attendees, the 2020 Jim Richter Mandolin Camp featuring Don Julin has been moved to September 23-26, 2020. It will still be held at the Grant Street Inn in Bloomington, Indiana. In order to ensure a safe […]
Anyone who knows me knows that I love Will Kimble. He’s an incredible soul, a great friend, and an incomparable builder of world-class mandolins. Since 2004, I’ve owned and played several of his mandolins–two-points, A’s, an F, and an octave. As he has done since the beginning, he puts the weight of Kimble Mandolins behind […]
I am again privileged to teach at Mandolin Camp North in April 2020! This is an incredible camp a few miles outside of Boston with a long storied history. Currently led by Kelly Stockwell (who is doing an incredible job), this camp started by Michael Holmes covers a lot of mandolin territory from folk to […]

I had a wonderful time teaching at Mandolin Camp North again this year. Kelly Stockwell and the Mandolin Camp North team put on an excellent camp. It’s the most fun I have had this year. Wonderful selection of teachers: Mike Compton, Barry Mitterhoff, Alan Bibey, moi, Don Stiernberg, Carl Jones, Sharon Gilchrist, David Bennedict, Joe K Walsh, […]
After a short hiatus, the 6th Jim Richter Mandolin Camp for the Rest of Us Featuring Don Julin will comence in 2019! It has been scheduled for July 10 through the 13th at the Grant Street Inn in Bloomington Indiana. As always, this camp focuses on non-bluegrass mandolin styles with a special emphasis on rock […]
I had a blast at Mandolin Camp North this past April. Great classes and instructors, including Don Stiernberg, Frank Solivan, Sharon Gilchrist, Skip Gorman, Mike Compton, Richie Brown, and more. It was a privilege to teach there and was glad that the big mandolin umbrella there allowed me to work on rock and blues instruction. I’ve […]
After 6 years of the same design, I’ve decided to try something else. Since I started doctoral studies, I’ve progressively contributed less and less to this site. For my own self-care, I’m committing myself to contributing more content this year and breaking from the routine of work and school.
I am scheduled to teach the blues mandolin track at Mandolin Camp North April 13-18th, 2018 in Charlton, Massachusetts. Due to family and school commitments, I was not able to host my Richter Mandolin Camp for the Rest of Us, so looking forward to visiting New England next year to talk and teach mandolin. Here’s […]
