Recap: Rich DelGrosso Bloomington IN Blues Mando Camp and Concert

Rene Castro (bluesmandolinman on the mandolincafe.com) politely rebuked me for not giving any report back on the Rich DelGrosso workshop I sponsored here in Bloomington last month. Figured I post some photos and share some info.

First off, as always, I feel very fortunate to have sponsors (likewise, good friends) in the mandolin community who help me get these events to completion. You’d think Bloomington Indiana would have some stuff going on between the IU here in town and BeanBlossom 30 minutes down the road, but it ain’t true. There are less than a handful of us in south central and central Indiana that put these things on. Plus, when you consider that 75 per cent of my camps include out of towners, some traveling as far away as New York State, maybe there’s not much going on period..

Any case, my deep thanks to Scott Tichenor and Will Kimble for continuing to give me support when I need it (and when I don’t even ask for it). Will is my compadre and it’s a definite plus to having him around at the events. He helps me keep my head on straight.

Also, Paul Wagoner, the innkeeper at the Grant St. Inn, is first class and has helped me every since I started putting these on with Taterbug. If you’ve attended any of my things out here, please send a note of appreciation to Paul at the Inn and let him know you’d like to see them continue to support us in these ventures. They’re a first rate bunch over there.

The man of the hour was obviously Rich. I had obviously been aware of Rich’s body of work before I first met him summer 2008 at the Midwest Mando Fest. Very friendly, personable, had a great time playing with him and Andra Faye. Sat in his workshop and was very impressed by his teaching ability. Given that he’s a retired science teacher, the man has the education bag down.

We had a wonderful meet and greet Friday evening, with Rich leading the round circle jam. Saturday was the workshop. Rich makes full use of his time. There was a precious lot of info, good instruction, and tab in his 4 and 1/2 hours.

We had 10 students for the workshop, including the 11 year old Maria Sarah, a music prodigy. Right now voice is her strong suit, but her instrumental abilities are quickly developing.

Saturday evening we had the concert. Myself, JJ Perry, Doc Malone, and Bruce Lockwood opened up with a couple of tunes and then backed Rich up for and hour and 1/2 of blues goodness, culminating in members of the workshop joining us for the last tune.

Rich and I afterwards spent awhile talking about his association with Howard Armstrong (Louie Blouie).

A great, though tiring, time. After this was over, I thought about not doing anymore do to the amount of work. But given a month respite, I’m already starting to come up with ideas for either this year or next. I have a great one in mind, suggested by a friend. We’ll see where it goes.

If you attended and want to share, feel free. I thank you for coming.

Spotlight: Theresa Arnold from Texas

Sometimes my opinion of YouTube as a community device is very low.  I’m a firm believer of the old saying, “I rather be quiet and thought a fool than speak my mind and be proven one.”  Some of the YouTube community does not practice self-censoring.

However, those are the bad days.  On the good days–which are most of the time–I recognize the communal and collaborative power of YouTube.  It’s part of the reason I’ve given the free mandolin lessons.  I’m by no means a powerhouse player, nor am I seasoned music educator.  But, if I can interest just a few people to pickup the mandolin or consider the mando in a different light, my time on YouTube is justified.

Equally exciting is the prospect of musical collaboration.  The recent YouTube orchestra at Carnegie Hall is a case in point.  Several months ago, I put up a songwriting challenge.  Though I didn’t have the response I’d hoped, it did garner a very interesting and exciting  rhythm submission from guys in Maine.

I’m very honored to share the following with you.  I recently wrote a little Monroe-esque tune for Monroe Mandolin Camp which will be held next weekend in Owensboro Kentucky.  It’s a chance to hang out with friends, get cool instruction from guys like my main man Mike Compton or Tim O’Brien, and eat BBQ.  I did not anticipate the following.

Theresa Arnold, singer/songwriter from Texas, saw said video, was touched by it, and wrote some cool words to it.  I’m flabbergasted by what this little lady from my former home of three years has given back to me.  This collaboration might even make it to my solo album–whenever I find the time or inclination to finish it.

Make sure to subscribe to Theresa’s channel–she’s got a killer voice.

NOTE:   The permanent location of this page is located in the PAGES navigation to the right:  RICH DELGROSSO BLUES MANDOLIN CAMP ‘09

I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting a Rich DelGrosso Blues Mandolin Camp in Bloomington Indiana December 4 and 5th, 2009.

Rich DelGrosso’s performances at clubs and festivals and the airplay of his recordings have garnered him five Blues Music Award nominations. His most recent are for Best Instrumentalist-Other for his mandolin and Acoustic Album of the Year for “Live From Bluesville,” a recorded jam session at XM radio’s “B.B.King’s Bluesville,”with Blues Music Award nominees and winners Fiona Boyes and Mookie Brill.

This writer/teacher/performer  is widely regarded as the leading exponent of mandolin blues. According to author/historian Mark Hoffman, DelGrosso is “the greatest living blues mandoman, the best since Yank (Rachell).” For over twenty years DelGrosso has written articles for Blues Revue, Living Blues, Mandolin Magazine, Frets, and Sing Out! and he has published instruction books on mandolin for Hal Leonard. He has presented workshops on mandolin across the country, earning him a Keeping the Blues Alive Award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis.

As can be seen, Rich is the acknowledged modern master of blues mandolin, who has learned from the masters:  Yank Rachell, Carl Martin, Louie Blouie, Johnny Young.  Rich has also played w/ the modern masters:  his last solo album “Get Your Nose Out of My Bizness” included appearances from James Harman, Pinetop Perkins, and Linwood Slim.

The Grant Street Inn, a wonderful bed and breakfast in downtown Bloomington, will be the center of all activities except for the Saturday concert.  Paul Wagoner, the innskeeper who has worked with me on my other camps, is offering attendees a special rate of $89 plus tax per night.  This is 1/2 off the normal price.  The breakfast is one of the best you’ll eat–ask Mike Compton!

The particulars:

Date: Friday December 4th and Saturday December 5th 2009

Format:
Friday night: meet and greet w/ Rich.  Jamming afterwards among campers.
Saturday: Workshop 12:30P to 5P (w/ two 15 minute breaks).  There will also be a concert Saturday evening either at a local bar or in a non-alcohol venue.  Workshop attendees can attend the performance for free.  Venue to be announced.

Cost: Tuition for the camp is $100.  This would be made payable to me via check.  You will handle housing separately with the Grant Street Inn.

Housing: For out of town folks, I encourage you to use the Grant Street Inn as it is the center of activities and is offering a great discount for our group.  Just tell them that you are booking for the Delgrosso Camp.  http://www.grantstreetinn.com

Lesson Plan:
Besides being a master of blues mandolin, Rich is a masterful teacher and has one of the most used beginning mandolin books through Hal Leonard.  Rich will cover mandolin basics and work his way into blues specific material and history.
